Þscription Senior Scientist is experienced in interacting with research subjects to do research studies involving the understanding of human diseases and improvement of human health. This person will work with Dr Natelson in a study to improve the health of Covid survivors who remain ill. S/he will also interact with research subjects to collect data related to the change in their perceived health across the duration of the study. The person will also work with Dr Natelson in preparing technical reports related to the ongoing studies in the Pain & Fatigue Study Center. This person will assist Dr Natelson in mentoring research staff so they fully understand their duties; s/he will also supervise their performance in doing these research related tasks. Responsibilities Conducts research to determine if non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation [VNS] improves the health of patients, never hospitalized, but who remain ill following COVID infection – i.e., a new treatment for patients with this problem known as Long Covid. Determines methods to collect data on autonomic neural activity to be done remotely; puts those methods into action in research study on VNS. Determines criteria for intake of potential research subjects and monitors Center personnel arranging for these subjects to participate in research. May assist in clinical laboratory operations. Prepares data on autonomic neural activity for evaluation and does appropriate statistics to confirm research questions. Follows strict safety procedures when handling materials to avoid contamination. Teaches principles of medicine and medical and laboratory procedures to students and research staff. Develops protocol for a VNS treatment trial that will confirm the efficacy of the treatment rather than the possibility of its being a placebo response. Designs research tools to determine efficacy of the treatment. Interacts with Center scientists to define research questions to be submitted for external funding to better understand the reasons for Long Covid and ways to reduce its negative effect on health. Evaluates individual subject’s compliance with study protocol and interacts with research subjects to maximize probability of a successful outcome. Communicates research results to the scientific community via published papers. Develops new proposals for research and obtain support for new and/ or continuing research activities. Makes recommendations that have a major impact on extensive scientific research activities. Performs other related duties. Qualifications Ph.D in sciences or related field Minimum five years of experience with scientific investigation. Must have demonstrated outstanding achievement in a field of research Must have contributed to a number of peer-reviewed publications, inventions or the like, at least some of which have had a major impact on advancing the field or discipline. Prior experience successfully securing external grant funding is highly desirable.
