PNNL is seeking a Senior Data Scientist (level 5) that will drive cutting-edge research in generative AI in PNNL’s AI and Data Analytics Division. The AI and Data Analytics Division includes over 400 staff working in data science and applied math, advanced analytic architectures, software engineering, and human-centered computing. The selected candidate will possess the experience and expertise required to influence the future directions of AI within the division, share their deep understanding of the sponsor mission, and guide the execution of laboratory research investments as well as high priority projects in data science and artificial intelligence. They will also play a key role in PNNL’s Center for AI and work across the organization partnering with scientist in applying AI to a variety of technical domains. Responsibilities In this position we are seeking a candidate that is a nationally recognized data science expert and adept at developing and fostering client relationships. It is expected that the individual identified for this position will: Advance the state of the art in data science specifically as it applies to generative AI. Serve in a leadership role on the PNNL Generative AI research investment. Drive and execute against a research agenda that will influence scientific and technological developments in AI. Serve as a technical advisor on complex data science projects. Develop new project opportunities and lead the development of technical proposals. Publish and present research findings in high-impact journals and at professional conferences. Collaborate with cross-functional teams across PNNL and other DOE National Labs to design and implement integrated solutions for critical national challenges. Leverage and maintain your external network of other institutions’ senior technical leaders. Stay current with industry trends and advancements in data science and machine learning. Actively engage with senior leaders in industry, academia and national laboratories to shape strategic thinking about future investments. Mentor and develop mid-level to senior data scientists. Attract senior technical leaders to PNNL. Serve as a role model for effective and creative technical leadership at the national level. Designs, develops, and implements methods, processes, and systems to analyze diverse data. Applies knowledge of statistics, machine learning, advanced mathematics, simulation, software development, and data modeling to integrate and clean data, recognize patterns, address uncertainty, pose questions, and make discoveries from structured and/or unstructured data. Produces solutions driven by exploratory data analysis from complex and high-dimensional datasets. Designs, develops, and evaluates predictive models and advanced algorithms that lead to optimal value extraction from the data. Demonstrates ability to transfer skills across application domains.
