PenFed is hiring a Senior Accountant, Payroll at our Alexandria, Virginia location. The primary purpose of this job is to apply comprehensive knowledge of payroll best practices and accounting principles in performing complex duties related to the processing and recording of payroll transactions. This position will work with outside vendors, auditors and others to analyze and provide information on operational, reporting, or system impact related to policy changes and new products; contribute to special projects; and may train staff. Responsible for the overall understanding of in-house payroll and accounting of the moderately complex operations. Analyze and reconcile general ledger payroll accounts on a timely basis, follow-up on any reconciling items, and prepare monthly journal entries in PeopleSoft Financials systems. Prepare month-end close entries including payroll interfaces, leave accruals, bonus accruals, inter-company journal entries, and accrued liabilities. Assist with biweekly payroll processing and ADP tax payments. Prepare, review, and analyze monthly compensation expense accuracy and completeness. Support with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing; ensure that all financial deadlines are met. Provide back up to payroll process within company policy guidelines and in compliance with Federal, State, and other laws and regulations, with an understanding of employer- and employee- paid benefits and tax regulations for the domestic payroll. Create basic ad-hoc reports on earnings, taxes and deductions as required. Serve as back-up for critical tasks at various levels within the team. Other duties that are broadly in line with the above key contributions as assigned. Work cross functionally with HR, HRIS, Treasury and external partners on policies, processes and help drive key system initiatives and improvements. Provide superior customer service to employees with questions relating to their payroll. Participate in the maintenance, testing and implementation of changes to the Payroll systems. Assist NCUA Examiners, external and internal Auditors during periodic examinations and audits. Qualifications Equivalent combination of education and experience is considered. Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, Accounting or a related field is preferred. Minimum of five (5) years of experience in accounting and payroll reporting is required. PeopleSoft Payroll experience preferred. Able to work in a high paced environment. Self-starter and strong ethical standards. Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail, completeness and accuracy. Proficient in Excel (VLOOKUP, Formula, Pivots). *This role is responsible for ensuring business continuity*. Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to an indoor office setting with moderate noise. *Most roles require working in an office setting with moderate noise and the ability to lift 25 pounds.* Travel Ability to travel to various worksites and be on-call may be required.
