Description

Reprieve is a UK charity founded in 1999. Reprieve uses strategic interventions to end the use of the death penalty globally, and to end extreme human rights abuses carried out in the name of “counterterrorism” or “national security”.

Reprieve works with the most disenfranchised people in society, as it is in their cases that human rights are most swiftly jettisoned and the rule of law is cast aside. Thus, Reprieve promotes and protects the rights of those facing the death penalty and those who are the victims of extreme human rights abuses carried out in the name of “counterterrorism” or “national security”, with a focus on arbitrary detention, torture, and extrajudicial executions.

Reprieve’s main office is in London, UK. Reprieve also supports full-time Fellows, who work as lawyers, investigators and campaigners in the countries in which we work. We work closely with a number of partner organisations in jurisdictions all over the world, who provide access to clients, expertise, knowledge and guidance on specific issues or regions. We work in cooperation with relevant government officials, individual lawyers and human rights defenders, as well as individual, corporate and foundation funders to further the cause of our shared goals.

A member of the senior management team at Reprieve, the Deputy Director of Development will help shape, develop and implement the strategy to raise the funds Reprieve needs to fulfil its mission. You will be responsible for leading a talented team responsible for securing funds from trusts and foundations, statutory bodies, major donors, events, corporate sources and the general public through digital campaigning. You will also be responsible for coordinating across teams to ensure Reprieve has effective systems in place for managing and reporting on grants, and identifying areas of work that could attract or benefit from additional funding.

You will have vision and be creative in how Reprieve can raise funds. You will be excited by ambitious targets and you yourself will be ambitious for what the team can achieve. You will be able to think strategically about long-term goals and targets. You will have at least five years’ experience at a senior fundraising level and have experience of managing individuals and teams.   Together with the Joint Executive Directors you will take responsibility for the team achieving their targets and for ensuring Reprieve has the money it needs to do its work and the systems in place to ensure we managing grants and donor relationships effectively.

Fundraising is essential to what we do and the Joint Executive Directors and Trustees are all committed to success. We know that raising money is the backbone to the organisation. Quite simply we cannot do our life-saving and life-changing work without money.

You will have an excellent understanding of how budgets work and how to connect finance and fundraising. You will ensure that the Development Team, Finance Team and Casework Team take a coordinated approach in ensuring that our funded projects are properly financially managed; that there are processes in place to ensure the teams leading these work areas are well supported in their financial reporting obligations; and that there is organisational understanding around our financial situation and funding requirements. You will understand how we can use our restricted income and maximise opportunities for securing funds for specific projects. You will be able to lead the team in producing financial reports for funders and ensuring that we accurately and professionally report on restricted income. You will be creative in how you approach maximising support from existing and future funders.

You will lead on a number of areas of work and will not be afraid to roll up your sleeves and muck in where needed. You will be a strong manager who is committed to developing the skills and capacity of individuals in your team, and identifying ways to build and strengthen the teams you manage.

Working with one of the Joint Executive Directors, you will oversee our programme of engagement with Major Donors. You will help her in researching and identifying new potential major donors and helping her manage relationships with existing funders. You will be responsible for planning and delivering the annual Gala dinner and any other fundraising events alongside one of the Joint Executive Directors. You will manage the development committee, a sub-committee of the board, and who support on the areas of events and high value donors.

You will support the institutional donor team on funding applications. You will have an excellent knowledge of raising money from Trusts and Foundations as well as statutory institutions. You will support the Project Lead in identifying new sources of income from these areas.

Reprieve’s income from the general public, through regular giving and one off gifts (largely delivered via our digital campaigns work), has grown significantly over the last five years with an ambitious target of raising over £900,000 from the general public in 2021, accounting for a projected quarter of our income. This is an area we want to grow further and you will be expected to provide leadership and guidance to the Head of Campaigns and Digital and the wider team in achieving these targets and ensuring they have the information they need to ensure high quality campaign materials which are sensitive to the complex cultural and political environments in which we operate.

Reprieve has undergone a period of growth over the last five years, doubling our income. We continue to have ambitious income targets and there will be a huge opportunity for a motivated and inspiring candidate to further grow our income from new sources as well as stabilise the income from our current donors.

The Deputy Director will have a strong foundational knowledge of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion best practices within the charity sector, and will seek to ensure that Reprieve’s communications align with best practice.

The ideal candidate will be excellent at building long lasting relationships, thoughtful, sensitive, organised and rigorous with exceptional attention to detail. They will be ambitious and be excited about raising money. They won’t be afraid to take no for an answer!

They will be committed to learning about the complex cultural and political contexts in which Reprieve operates, be flexible and curious, with a passion for the work, for principles of diversity and inclusion, and an unwavering commitment to our clients.
