The purpose of this job is to perform skilled work associated with the construction of wood or metal structures, construction/repair of buildings and furniture, various woodworking projects, locksmith work, and other department projects. Responsibilities Acts in a professional, respectful, and courteous manner at all times. Creates a customer-focused climate and provides quality services and support to school and other stakeholders. Complies with applicable district, state, and federal codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures. Performs carpentry and locksmith work on school buildings, equipment, systems, and related facilities; constructs, installs, repairs, and/or refinishes wood structures, cabinetry, furniture, and structural woodwork; coordinates projects with other trade/craft employees or outside contractors as required. Ensures that physical structures, equipment/system operations, and repair/maintenance activities are in compliance with applicable laws and regulations; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations. Responds to work orders or work requests to conduct various repair/maintenance projects as assigned; calculates/estimates time and material needed to complete projects; plans work activities to minimize down time in classrooms, offices, or other work areas; conducts maintenance inspections of buildings, equipment, and facilities to identify necessary repairs; reports potentially hazardous or dangerous situations to supervisor; responds to emergency situations. Performs various skilled, semi-skilled, and manual tasks associated with carpentry projects and other department projects, such as repairing structural damage to wood/steel/concrete structures, performing demolition of walls/ceilings, designing/constructing cabinetry, finishing/installing cabinetry, repairing cabinets, building and installing countertops, installing doors/frames, replacing wood/metal doors, repairing doors and emergency exits, installing/repairing door hardware, building walls with wood/metal studs, installing insulation, installing/hanging sheetrock and wall paneling, finishing sheetrock, constructing obsolete wood trim, installing wood trim, installing cove base and baseboards, designing/constructing decks, designing/constructing handicap ramps, constructing wood/concrete steps, installing/repairing windows and hardware, installing weather stripping, replacing wood/metal siding on buildings, installing floor systems, installing carpet and hardwood flooring, installing ceramic/vinyl tile, designing/installing acoustical ceilings, underpinning portable buildings, repairing portable floors/walls, repairing/replacing auditorium seats, installing/repairing restroom partitions, building/repairing awnings, repairing garage/rollup doors, installing/repairing door closures, or repairing classroom furniture. Performs various tasks associated with welding projects, such as welding/repairing metal components, welding/repairing bleachers, fabricating metal doors and window frames, or fabricating parts. Performs various tasks associated with locksmith projects, such as installing new locks and key cabinets, repairing locks and panic bars, re-keying locks, duplicating keys by code or pattern, opening/bypassing locks when keys are unavailable, keying/re-keying restricted locks from bidding list, or securing buildings after vandalism. Performs various general/manual work tasks associated with department projects, which may include installing signs and mailboxes, installing bulletin boards, installing map railing, installing maps/screens, installing televisions and wall mount brackets, installing flag brackets and pencil sharpeners, repairing flag poles/cables, installing basketball goals/backboards, repairing lockers, breaking up concrete, erecting concrete forms, pouring/finishing concrete, bending metal, moving furniture, setting up classrooms, building scaffolding, climbing ladders, or lifting/moving heavy materials. Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with department projects, which may include a utility vehicle, bucket truck, backhoe, lift, air compressor, generator, pressure washer, pump, air impact tool, jackhammer, concrete mixer, drill, drill press, reciprocating saw, circular saw, miter saw, table saw, jig saw, band saw, router, surface planer, sander, jointer, electric mortise machine, tub saw, grinder, torch, laser level, key code machine, key cutting machine, carpentry tools, locksmith tools, tile tools, carpet tools, window tools, mechanic tools, scaffolding, ladder, or two-way radio. Inspects/tests machinery, equipment and parts for proper operations; makes appropriate adjustments, repairs, or replacements; reports problem situations. Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, or cleaning shop/work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment. Transports, loads and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects. Reads and interprets maps, diagrams and blueprints. Communicates through the proper channels to keep supervisor and other appropriate personnel informed of impending problems or events of unusual nature. Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees, students, and other individuals. Works collaboratively with school staff, students, parents, and other stakeholders. Attends work and arrives to work on time. Maintains confidentiality. Adheres to the Teacher Code of Ethics as defined by Tennessee Law. Attends meetings as needed. Travels to school locations and other locations throughout the district to perform job tasks. Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed; assists other skilled-trade employees as needed. Directs and inspects the work of carpenter assistant(s) as assigned. Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, purchase vouchers, warehouse requisitions, accident reports, on-the-job accident reports, time cards, or other documents. Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, purchase voucher records, vehicle maintenance schedules, codes, blueprints, diagrams, specifications, maps, asbestos management plan, material safety data sheets, manuals, catalogs, directories, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate. Monitors inventory of equipment and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new/replacement materials. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge/Education/Experience: Vocational/Technical degree or Apprenticeship in Carpentry; supplemented by three (3) years previous experience and/or training that includes residential/commercial carpentry, locksmith work, welding/fabrication, building construction, and general building maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license Random drug testing required. Skills/Qualifications: Ability to communicate effectively verbally. Ability to train and direct the work of electrician technicians and assistant(s). Ability to use the required equipment and tools to complete job assignments. Ability to read and interpret instructions, blueprints, diagrams, maps, and other documents. Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Ability to calculate decimals and percentages. Ability to work in adverse weather and environmental conditions. Compensation: Salary is based on a combination of relevant education and experience.
