Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently recruiting for a Principal Civil Designer with extensive experience in the Oil & Gas, Petrochemical or similar sector of the industry to provide support to our Client in the execution of projects.

Job Objective:
  • Performs the function of Lead Civil Designer on small, large or complex projects.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all civil draughting work carried out on assigned projects activities complies with and supports the Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality Management System.
  • Provides guidance and supervision to Civil Designers and Trainee Civil Designers as required.

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the administration, overall technical direction and co-ordination of civil/structural draughting work on assigned projects.
  • Responsible for project initiation and set up in accordance with the project filing index, project execution plan and co-ordination procedure.
  • Produce Civil Design office drawing deliverable register, including drawing man-hour weightings based on approved budget man-hours, planned, actual and forecast start, issued for comment and approved for construction release dates.
  • Supply to DMG a WebDMS bulk load sheet indicating project civil/structural deliverable drawing numbers, titles, cost codes, work divisions, document types and weighted budget man hours.
  • Supply to Planner / DMG drawing production steps and time-strings.
  • Receives engineering design information from the Lead Civil engineer.
  • Review initial designs, specifications, drawings and other data necessary to establish correctness of design.
  • Develop project general notes and typical detail drawings.
  • Review and amend supplier and document distribution matrices as necessary.
  • Produce and issue project civil and structural job notes at the beginning of project.
  • Assign work to designated Senior/Civil / Junior designers as appropriate.
  • Ensure assigned work is executed strictly in accordance with Corporate, Client and National procedures, standards and specifications.
  • Produce monthly project progress reports and progress narrative with identified concerns.
  • Maintain and update progress on WebDMS.
  • Attend engineering co-ordination and general project meetings as required.
  • Co-ordinate interface activities with the Piping, Electrical, and Instrumentation design Offices and Project, Process, Vessel, Civil, Electrical and Instrumentation engineering groups as appropriate.
  • Attend Internal and Client model review meetings and ensure timeous close out of applicable model review comments.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of the project draughting master A3 as issued drawing files.
  • Prepare man-hour estimates for contract change flags. Discuss and finalise with the Chief Civil Designer. Alert the Project Manager to circumstances considered to be subject to a contract change.
  • Act as prime contact on draughting matters between company and the Clients engineering staff (if applicable).
  • Act as prime contact between the project site construction group and home office on draughting matters.
  • Check and comment on internal discipline and supplier drawings related to the assigned project utilising Bluebeam software.
  • Liaises with respective Lead Civil Engineer on engineering related issues.
  • Liaises with allocated Civil draughting Checker.
  • Assumes role of civil and structural checker on smaller projects as and when the need arises.
  • Attend (auditee) discipline and project Quality Assurance internal and external audits. Review audit reports with the HOD Civil Designer and follow up to ensure any corrective action required has been taken.
  • If required execute discipline technical audits of Civil Design work carried out within the group.
  • Receives instructions from HOD Civil Designer.
  • Assist the HOD Civil Designer with the training programme for junior staff as appropriate.
  • Contribute to project lessons learnt database.
  • Perform such duties as may reasonably be assigned by the HOD Civil Designer.


Skills / Qualifications

Qualifications:
  • National Civil Diploma or equivalent.
  • Intergraph Smartplant 3D Structural modelling software package experience.
  • Bentley Microstation 3D CADD software package experience version 8 or later.
  • 10 years minimum related industry experience in Civil and Structural draughting

Technical Expertise

Is seen by others as a Designer who can provide clear technical direction and decision making. Uses coaching methods and a consultative style to aid others with problem solving and technical queries. Demonstrates an on-going ability and interest to improve technically and maintain current technical knowledge. Responsible for checking models and deliverables when the need arises and if requested. Provides support to HOD Designer and feedback.

Cross Discipline Project Team Interaction

Directly responsible for project set up and team structure across disciplines. Proactively works with other discipline designers/engineers. Working with lead Civil engineer and other discipline leads at project meetings , internal/external and client resolving issues.

Understanding and meeting Schedule and Schedule dependencies

Accountable for deliverable production and managing discipline milestone/schedule. Actively supports the reporting and updating of web DMS. Distributes the workload allocation to the design team.

Commercial Awareness and Customer Focus

Demonstrates increasing customer (client) focus, be aware of and responsive to customer (client) needs without sacrificing the project and Corporate objectives.

Interpretation of Engineering Requirements

Takes direct responsibility for quality of the interpretation. Initiates design solutions.

Challenges work practices and methodology and initiates change where appropriate.

Communication

Ability to present information to individuals or groups. Ability to convey information clearly and concisely to groups or

individuals either verbally or in writing to ensure that they understand the information and the message.
