Overview Our expert staff provide multi-disciplinary solutions to complex energy and environmental issues. Key capabilities include science (chemical and mechanical). We employ a systems perspective that includes, discovery technology development and scale-up as well as economic, regulatory, and market acceptance issues necessary for successful technology commercialization. EP&MD focuses on three mission contributions: Clean Fossil Energy, Electricity Infrastructure, & Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. Responsibilities Are you interested in learning state-of-the-art approaches to metals manufacturing? The Applied Materials and Manufacturing Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking a postdoc mechanical or materials engineer to support research in extrusion of metal composites with high thermal and electrical conductivity using Shear-Assisted Processing and Extrusion (ShAPE™). ShAPE™ is less energy-intensive, requires fewer manufacturing steps, and can produce materials with better properties because no melting is involved. This position requires someone who wants to be “hands on” with machinery and develop industrially relevant processes to generate materials with specific microstructure. Applicants should have a strong background in thermomechanical processing methods but also have some knowledge of physical, mechanical, and process metallurgy so that they can work with metallurgists to design intended processing conditions. The position holder will contribute to the development and application of high-performance materials and innovative processing approaches, supporting business lines associated with next generation grid components, lightweight vehicles, heat exchangers, building materials, and other markets where improvements in materials performance and energy efficiency are of interest to the Department of Energy and other clients. The position holder will: Research, plan, design, and conduct experiments involving ShAPE and other specialty processing or testing systems. Collaborate with others to develop individual steps and combined processes for manufacturing composite materials as well as finishing, treating, and strengthening them. Determine material properties at various scales using established or novel protocols. Relate microstructure and properties of materials to operating conditions and external factors. Document the results in reports and peer-reviewed publications. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, materials engineering, materials science, or related field Experience in solid phase processing approaches (e.g. friction stir welding) or traditional thermomechanical processing of metals (extrusion, rolling, stamping, etc.) Strong team player Ability to perform work with the level of quality and timeliness to meet required project and client expectations. Appropriate analytic, task management, and communication skills (both oral and written) to clearly articulate research objectives and outcomes. Demonstrated aptitude with mechanical equipment and machining is required. Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment The position holder will work in research laboratories, which are inherently hazardous working environments. Exposure to mechanical hazards, chemicals, etc., are kept to a minimum and mitigated through the use of controls and the maintenance of a safety-conscious work environment.
