The Radiochemistry Group is seeking a highly motivated individual with a strong ethic of service to the scientific community and a commitment to both scientific excellence and national impact on critical scientific and technical problems. This opening is to support the goals of the Environmental Signatures Team, which broadly encompasses impacts from anthropogenic processes (including investigations of contaminant fate and transport) as well as National Security applications such as nuclear safeguards. This position will give the candidate exposure to research and development within the national laboratory complex with opportunities to learn and support operations of ultra-trace mass spectrometry facilities. The candidate should have some exposure to analytical chemistry and/or wet chemistry laboratory experience. The candidate should have an interdisciplinary background, including coursework and/or research experience in biology, geology, chemistry, and environmental science. They will work with mentor(s) on specific project tasks with the expectation that they become more independent in carrying out work with experience and time. The successful candidate will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with state-of-the-art research equipment within several laboratories at PNNL, including a suite of seven multicollection mass spectrometers and associated supporting analytical instruments and facilities. Applicants must be willing to learn and employ safe techniques for handling hazardous (radiological and biological) materials. Candidates must be able to work with colleagues in a dynamic laboratory environment on the implementation of experimental procedures. A curiosity for the world around them is essential. Responsibilities The candidate will be responsible for: Hands-on, daily tasks in support of routine laboratory activities. Independently completing assigned tasks, exercising limited judgement on work details and making preliminary selections and adaptations of technical alternatives. This may include use of standard analytical equipment and/or creating custom solutions. Building a professional reputation for technical expertise by fully applying and interpreting standard theories, principles, methods, tools and technologies within specialty. Travel and/or field work up to approximately 25% may be required. Candidates are expected to be proficient with standard office software, such as Microsoft Excel and Word. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are also required. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must have received a Bachelor’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Preferred Qualifications: Excellent oral and written communication skills, a demonstrated ability to work individually and as a team member. The preferred candidate will have experience with wet chemistry and/or analytical equipment or instrumentation (e.g., ICP-MS, ICP-OES, IRMS). B.S. in environmental science, chemistry, geology, biochemistry, or related field. The ideal candidate is a well-organized, self-starter, with a high capacity for attention to detail. Time management skills are essential to balance activities among several concurrently operating projects. Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment This position involves laboratory work with hazardous chemicals (acids, bases, etc.) and trace levels of radionuclides. Additional Information This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance. Requirements: U.S. Citizenship Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
