Overview PNNL's Earth System Science Division enables energy independence and national security through leadership in earth systems science,engineering, and decision analytics. Our work focuses on solving complex problems in the dynamic Earth system. Our interdisciplinary scientists steward a breadth of efforts that encompass research on plants to groundwater science and coastal zones, to storm prediction. Our research focuses on understanding and mitigating operational risks at the interface of human and natural environments. This includes predicting the impacts of natural hazards and extreme climate events on Earth and human systems, along with the impacts of wildfire,flooding, sea level rise and storm surges. We focus on understanding and mitigating environmental contamination and increasing the resiliency, security and sustainability of water resources. We provide geointelligence through advanced sensing and data analytics to forecast complex system behaviors and operational performance to understand human-natural systems. This includes informed decision making and enhanced community resilience, advanced monitoring, and remote sensing of environmental systems for energy and national security. It also includes developing energy systems, including geothermal energy, sustainable oil and gas production, storage and utilization, along with carbon sequestration. Driven by a “science-to-solutions” philosophy, we provide scientific leadership and technology to enhance national security, mitigate natural hazards and optimize disaster response. In the critical areas of energy, environment, intelligence, and defense, we deliver insights and decision support through the development of tools and solutions. Responsibilities Integrates operational capabilities, requirements, and solutions across research and support organizations to enable and enhance effective and efficient project execution in support of the Lab's mission. Maintains an awareness of existing and planned changes in the operational risk profile of assigned envelope. Maintains situational awareness of operational needs and emerging regulatory requirements, providing analysis of options and recommendations to mitigate exposure to operational risk and reduce the frequency of operational upset conditions. During upset conditions, leads management in the identification and implementation of immediate actions. This may include:leading or participating in critiques and accident investigation, participating in causal analyses, Identifyies and manages corrective actions and lessons learned. Evaluates the need for, and provides necessary Subject Matter Expert (SME) support to line management, staff, and Project Management Offices to assist with assessment activities and risk identification and mitigation. Leads the day-to-day work being conducted in IOPS spaces including coordinating, scheduling, and logistics of research staff, crafts personnel, and other visiting researchers. Takes lead in scope, schedule, and budget for projects or large tasks Maintains and manages the utilization of equipment, systems, and capabilities within the IOPS space. Coordinates operations and preforms duties within the DOE and appropriate regulatory agencies requirements. Interprets internal/external business challenges and recommends best practices to improve products, processes, or services Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: BS/BA and 7 years of relevant experience -OR- MS/MA or higher and 5 years of relevant experience Preferred Qualifications: Excellent organizational skills Knowledge of acoustic/radio telemetry study design and array maintenance Experience operating boats on large rivers (3+ years of experience) Knowledge of basic boat maintenance Experience leading field crews Compile and manage large data sets Knowledge of fish species inhabiting the Pacific Northwest Desirable characteristics include attention to detail, the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team, possession of a strong work ethic, and a willingness to work extra hours when warranted to achieve project goals Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment Long hours for field work, inclement weather, industrial hydroelectric projects, work on water, heavy lifting Additional Information Not Applicable.
