Overview The Nuclear and Criticality Safety Team at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) provides an opportunity to work in a dynamic environment supporting challenging and interesting nuclear Research and Development (R&D) projects with national and international impact. Responsibilities Maintains the Documented Safety Analysis (DSA) in accordance with DOE-STD-3009 and Technical Safety Requirements (TSR). Performs Hazard and Accident Analyses. Performs Unreviewed Safety Question (USQ) evaluations at PNNL. Supports implementation of the DSA and TSR through reviews, mentoring, and training. Assist with or lead routine monitoring of the Nuclear Safety Program including reviewing surveillances, internal, and external NS program assessments and other Safety Management Program (SMP) assessments to determine leading indicators and health of the program. Maintains awareness of existing and planned changes to operations and regulatory requirements to assure safe, seamless, and compliant work can continue to be executed. Addresses facility and process safety needs principally in nuclear‐related construction, operation, and decommissioning. Responsible assisting with instructing USQ, DSA, and TSR courses. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant experience -OR- MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant experience -OR- PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience Preferred Qualifications: Experience in authoring Documented Safety Analysis (DSA), Technical Safety Requirements (TSR), and Unreviewed Safety Question (USQ). Experience performing hazard analysis and control allocation in accordance with DOE-STD-3009. Experience performing accident analysis and dose consequence calculations for radiological release event. Previous experience in a DOE HC-2/nuclear facility. Previous technical experience in nuclear safety. Experience with connecting multiple safety programs to support DSA/TSR/USQ. Experience mentoring operational staff, system engineers, and research in matters of nuclear safety. High level writing and verbal communication skills are required. The ability to obtain Radiological Worker qualifications. Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment Work at Building 325 – Radiochemical Processing Laboratory, a Hazard Category 2, DOE-owned non-reactor nuclear facility. Potential exposure to low levels of ionizing radiation and standard industrial hazards. Additional Information This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance. Requirements: * U.S. Citizenship * Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B. *Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the candidate selected is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP). Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months can be demonstrated.
