Overview The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy. PNNL is seeking a scientist/engineer to support research and development activities associated with advancing the use of non-destructive evaluation (NDE) technologies and methodologies for material state investigations (defects, microstructure, and properties), component conditions, and structural health monitoring. The successful candidate will work with experienced NDE scientists and engineers to assess and develop advanced inspection methods and extending NDE methodologies into a wide array of advanced technology areas, including power generation systems (nuclear, gas, and coal), aerospace, petro-chemical, advanced manufacturing and critical infrastructure, as well as military venues The successful candidate will provide technical contributions in a complex, time-sensitive, and safety-conscious laboratory working environment. This will include supporting research projects with multi-disciplinary teams of electrical engineers, physicists, mechanical engineers, chemists, materials scientists, and statisticians. Of particular interest is a candidate who has the motivation to work on complex technical projects for demanding clients and possess a proven ability to think innovatively and apply technical capabilities to nontraditional challenges. It is expected that the candidate will assist in advancing PNNL's research efforts on novel inspection, characterization, and evaluation methods and systems. The candidate will be provided opportunities to prepare materials for scientific and technical products, formal reports, presentations, and to publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences. Responsibilities Researches, develops, designs, and tests electrical/electronic systems, components, equipment, and networks as well as their control and optimization theory and techniques. Adapts and applies control theory to design electrical/electronic systems with desired behaviors. Designs, develops, installs, and supervises all aspects of control systems and processes. Determines design approaches and parameters. Analyzes equipment to establish operating data, conducts experimental tests, and evaluates results. Selects components and equipment based on analysis of specifications and reliability. Researches, develops, and applies tools, simulations, and models of electric power systems and components addressing problems in planning, operations, economics, resilience, and optimization of system performance. Designs and develops new techniques and methodologies for control and integration of diverse energy resources and points of consumption. Develops and applies system architectures, models, and technologies for secure and reliable electric power systems and related technologies such as communications systems and grid cyber security. Must be able to work well independently and with others, in diverse teams. This includes a willingness to accept mentorship, training, and assessment related to the application of NDE techniques. Demonstrated potential to successfully support Laboratory-based R&D projects by providing high quality technical deliverables. Familiar with the use of laboratory instrumentation (oscilloscopes, signal generators, amplifiers, etc.). Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to actively participate in project planning, including preparation of experimental procedures and documentation of results. Computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office and a capability and willingness to learn NDE data acquisition/analysis/modeling software. Experience with programming languages, such as MATLAB or Python. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: BS/BA or higher Preferred Qualifications: BS in electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering. Experience with ultrasonic phased array inspection of piping and welds. Familiar with software tools required to processes and present data. Experience with Eddy Current systems, e.g. Nortec 500 and 600 software interfaces. Experience applying NDE methods to a variety of materials from metals, weld regions and composites. Experience in ultrasonic probe and advanced sensor design. Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment Not Applicable Testing Designated Position This is not a Testing Designated Position (TDP).
