Job Summary Under general supervision, the Alarm Center Dispatcher in the Emergency Communications Center is responsible for monitoring communication equipment, receiving incoming calls for assistance and dispatching personnel and equipment. Position is represented by a Union Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Essential Responsibilities: Operate communication equipment to receive incoming calls for assistance. Activate alarm system to notify fire stations. Operate telephone console to receive incoming calls for assistance. Question caller to determine nature of problem and type and number of personnel and equipment needed, following established guidelines. Scan status charts and computer screen to determine units available. Monitor alarm system signals that indicate location of fire or other emergency. Operate communications system to dispatch fire, medical and other personnel and equipment. Input commands to update computer files and maintain logs. Provide pre-arrival instructions to caller, using knowledge of emergency medical techniques. Relay instructions or information to remove units. Routinely test communications, alarm equipment, and backup systems to ensure serviceability. Update Alarm Room logs as required. Train others in Alarm Room operation when requested. Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested. Minimum Requirements High School Diploma or equivalent. Possess one (1) year of verified NTTR Protective Services Dispatcher service time per Union Seniority rules. Note: Performing other duties within the Fire Department do not substitute for Dispatch services. Achieve qualified Journeyman per Union rules. DoD Telecommunicator I and II certification levels are preferred. Other related industry certifications accepted. Possess a working knowledge of computerized fire alarm and reporting systems. Qualify for and maintain a government Top Secret security clearance. Possess a valid state issued driver’s license. Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands: Work is performed in an office, shop facility with no unusual hazards, occasional lifting to 20 pounds, kneeling, standing and walking, routinely sitting and constant use of speech/hearing abilities for communications. The nature of the work requires the ability to communicate clearly and accurately. Routinely required to sit for extended periods of time. Must speak in a clear manner and be temperamentally suited for the position, including being able to remain calm and take decisive action during emergencies; remain alert during periods of inactivity and when carrying out normal repetitive operations.
