Learn more at HonorHealth.com. Responsibilities Job Summary Utilizes the Nursing Process to perform a variety of patient care activities under the supervision/direction of a Registered Nurse. Applications of specific skills are limited to those in which the Extern has received didactic instruction and demonstrates clinical competency. The Extern may not administer medications or IV therapy, unless it is under the direct supervision of an RN. The Nurse Graduate Extern functions as an Extern, but has graduated from an approved registered nursing program and is awaiting licensure or licensure examination. Note that incumbent must pass licensure examination within 6 months after the date of classification into this position. The staff member must demonstrate the knowledge of the principals of growth and development across the life span and demonstrate the skills necessary to provide direct and indirect care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her assigned unit. The individual must possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the Department Operating Policies. Contributes to ongoing patient care by utilizing the Nursing Process (subjective and objective data collection, formulation of a plan and diagnosis, implementation of the plan of care, and evaluation of patient response to intervention) and evidence based knowledge to provide comprehensive care to a designated patient population. Accurately documents on and maintains the patient and hospital medical records and reports care data to appropriate member of the health care team. Performs basic nursing procedures in accordance with hospital policies. Seeks guidance from the appropriate resources relevant to the situation and interfaces with multidisciplinary team members to provide optimum care. Provides customer service by addressing or redirecting questions or concerns from patients, families, caregivers, visitors, or health care team. Complies with unit and other regulatory educational requirements. Supports quality improvement activities. Participates in continuing education and quality improvement activities. Practice and performance reflects knowledge of the relevant Nurse Practice Acts, compliance, regulation, legislation, certification, and HonorHealth system and department policies. Utilizes material resources in a cost-effective manner. May recommend cost-saving measures within the department or assigned unit. Assists, provides input and serves as a member of the health care team. The nurse extern will have two tries to pass the NCLEX exam within 6 months of hire. Failure to pass the NCLEX exam after two attempts will result in reclassification or termination as deemed appropriate. Qualifications Education High School Diploma or GED Required Other Completed a NLN/CCNE accredited Associate Degree or Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, awaiting NCLEX exam Required Licenses and Certifications Basic Life Support (BLS) Required
