The Nuclear Material Processing group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking a chemical engineer with a primary focus in molten salt processing, aqueous actinide processing, and design of equipment for physical property measurements of materials to join a team of multidisciplinary scientists and engineers working to strengthen national security and advance nuclear science. The ideal candidate will have hands on experience in molten salts processing with actinide and/or actinide surrogate materials. Experience working in radiological fume hoods and air/inert gloveboxes is desired but not required. Responsibilities The successful candidate will work with senior team members as a contributor to the broad program research. The candidate’s contributions will derive from their ability to propose technical alternatives on existing projects and efforts, ultimately leading to the development of new proposal concepts. The candidate will work independently to complete recurring assignments and define/lead project work at a small task/project level, reporting results to the larger team on time and within budget. They will be expected to contribute to proposals as well as embrace expectations for quality, safety, and security in all aspects of the job. Designs, develops, and operates processes or unit operations to create a diverse range of products. Evaluates and manipulates the chemical properties of various substances used in the fabrication of new products. Designs, models evaluates, and implements chemical processes, instrumentation, and equipment to ensure effectiveness in engineering and design. Performs trials, tests, and/or experiments to support engineering, production, and/or R&D activities. Applies the principles of chemistry, nuclear science, biology, physics, material science, math, and engineering to solve problems that involve the production, use or conversion of chemicals, materials, and energy. Uses the principles of biology and the tools of engineering to mimic biological systems to create products or to modify and control biological systems so that they can replace, augment, sustain, or control chemical and mechanical processes. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience -OR- MS/MA -OR- PhD Preferred Qualifications: Degree in Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Material Science, Chemistry, or other related field. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at scientific conferences. A demonstrated ability to work individually and as a team member. Experience with radioactive materials and nuclear science/technology. Experience with radiological fume hoods and gloveboxes. Experience designing and building equipment for physical property measurements of materials. Experience designing and building aqueous and/or non-aqueous processing systems. Experience with air sensitive chemistry and inert gloveboxes. Experience with pyro-metallurgical/molten salt processing of materials. Experience with steps in the nuclear fuel cycle (such as solvent extraction, ion exchange, precipitation, and halogenation). Experience setting up new laboratory capabilities. Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment The incumbent must be able/willing to work with hazardous chemicals and radioactive materials. Additional Information This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance. Requirements: U.S. Citizenship. Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
