Overview The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security. Responsibilities The Systems Modeling Team of the Computing, Analytics, and Modeling Group, at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking a post-Bachelors research associate to support the development of modeling and analytics methods and molecular software tools that will advance mission science for the Department of Energy, Office of Science, Biological and Environmental Research (BER) program. Group Description: The Environmental Molecular Sciences Division’s (EMSD’s) Computing, Analytics, and Modeling (CAM) group focuses on advancing the science of the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) user facility and the mission science of its sponsor, the DOE Office of Science’s Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) mission, by delivering world-class capabilities and developments in computational science, data analytics and transformations, and modeling sciences. The group, which reports to the CAM Group Leader, works with researchers and staff in EMSL’s other two science areas (Environmental Transformations and Interactions, or ETI, and Functional and Systems Biology, FSB) to deliver on EMSL’s three strategic science objectives: DigiPhen, MONet, and Modeling and Data Sciences. Due to the centrality of data and computing infrastructure systems in the group’s work, CAM also works closely with the group led by EMSL’s Chief Data Officer. The CAM group has two teams: Systems Modeling, and Data Transformations. As a post-Bachelors research associate in the Systems Modeling Team of the Computing, Analytics, and Modeling Group, you will be part of an interdisciplinary project aimed to explore the quantum advantage for nonlinear and multiscale dynamics in biophysics. The candidate will be expected to perform interdisciplinary and world-leading research at PNNL collaborating closely with laboratory personnel and colleagues from universities. Responsibilities and Accountabilities include: Derive first-principle equations related to whole-cell simulations in biophysics. Develop linearization method to efficiently linearize the first-principle equations suitable for quantum linear system algorithms (QLSA); Analyze the complexity of QLSAs for the linearized equations. Perform classical and quantum simulations. Publishing results in highly visible, peer-reviewed venues (e.g., conferences and journals). Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must have received a Bachelor’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 required. Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor in Physics or a related field Strong background in quantum algorithms and biophysics Experience with reaction-diffusion equation, Carleman linearization, and quantum linear system algorithms Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment Not applicable Additional Information Not applicable Testing Designated Position This is not a Testing Designated Position (TDP) About PNNL Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a world-class research institution powered by a highly educated, diverse workforce committed to the values of Integrity, Creativity, Collaboration, Impact, and Courage.
