Overview The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security. Responsibilities Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, WA is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral research associate with a strong background centered around terrestrial and aquatic biogeochemistry. Specific experience in (1) derivation and/or analysis of multivariate data types including microbial ‘omics data and molecular properties of organic matter and/or (3) data-model assimilation is desired. Strong teamwork and proficiency in R and/or Python is required. The research associate will work on two related projects – the Molecular Observatory Network (MONet) and a U.S. Department of Energy-funded project focused on understanding and modelling the response of coastal urban systems to environmental extremes. The projects consist of both laboratory and field-based approaches, in coordination with local and national collaborators. This approach requires significant planning, organization, coordination, and communication. The candidate must have strong communication and organizational skills. All candidates will be expected to generate peer-reviewed publications and engage in open science. Responsibilities will include a mix of laboratory experiments and data analysis. The balance of these responsibilities will be determined by the skills and interest of the applicant. This position will be based in Richland, WA. Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret ‘omics, chemical, and/or hydrological data from environmental systems and/or implement microbial, biogeochemical, and/or hydrological models. Demonstrated experience for analysis/modeling of diverse data types using contemporary scripting languages such as Python and/or R. Demonstrated leadership ability, creativity, and attention to detail. Strong organizational as well as written/oral communication skills with significant motivation to publish in the peer reviewed literature, and to make outputs (e.g., code, data) openly available. Strong interest in team-based interdisciplinary science, with the willingness and ability to work independently when required. Preferred Education/Credential: Ph.D. in environmental biogeochemistry, engineering, and/or microbiology or related field.
