Overview The Coastal Sciences Division (CSD) is based across different PNNL sites including Richland, Seattle, and Sequim, Washington and Portland, Oregon. This position is located on PNNL’s Sequim Campus. The PNNL-Sequim Campus is located on Washington's Olympic Peninsula and hosts the Marine Coastal Research Laboratory (MCRL), the Department of Energy's only dedicated marine laboratory. This unique facility and the capabilities of the Coastal Sciences researchers deliver science and technology that are critical to the nation's energy, environmental, and security future. The location of the campus allows us to go from bench to bay to enable research to support of variety of ocean-based applications including renewable energy development, coastal resilience and planning, and research and technology development of importance to our sponsors. Coastal Sciences Division encompasses a broad range of disciplines, including coastal ecosystems, environmental biogeochemistry, coastal resources modeling, technology development and biotechnology, biofuels development, marine energy development and offshore wind. These underpin three key themes for research: Enabling sustainable development of ocean energy. Understanding and mitigating long-term impacts of human activities, including climate change, on marine resources. Protecting coastal environments from security threats. This position is located at the PNNL Sequim campus Responsibilities This position will support both research and facilities organizations. The Operations Technician will help ensure safe, secure, compliant, and effective operations associated with the Coastal Sciences Division and Facilities & Infrastructure Operations Division. The Operations Technician will champion safe conduct of research and strive to create a strong safety culture across the Divisions. They will report directly to the Integrated Coastal Research and Technology Group Leader. Job duties and expectations include, but are not limited to: Coastal Sciences Supports Marine Operations through planning for field campaigns, vessel support and maintenance, and overall marine operations. Supports Operations of the Laboratories by working closely with the Operations Manager, CSMs, Facilities, and researchers to ensure safe conduct of operations within all laboratory and outdoor spaces on campus. Demonstrates experience working on complex problems and providing solutions. Contributes to Scope of Work for marine vessels and related equipment service contracts. Contributes to writing procedures for deployments and operations of marine activities. Communicates with service providers. Writes and manages preventative maintenance work orders including the completion of drills, safety inspections, and mechanical service of trailers and boats. Identifies improvement/efficiency opportunities. Develops a professional network throughout the laboratory. Works independently, with increasing responsibility. Facilities & Infrastructure Operations Supports the collaborative research mission of PNNL, including tasks as directed by the Building Manager, and to ensure assigned activities are coordinated / completed in a timely, cost-effective manner with limited impact on occupant operations. Coordinating activities such as custodial services, pest control, laundry services, grounds maintenance, exterior building maintenance that they are done efficiently, with limited impact on occupant operations. Performing daily walk-throughs of facilities to assess general conditions. Perform Preventative Maintenance and Corrective Maintenance activities. Support R&D work activities Maintaining an effective working relationship with all members of the Core Team and occupant research organizations. Working with customers including lease owners and R&D personnel on planned service interruptions for maintenance and construction activities. This position will also assist members of the working group in the oversight of off shift activities. Posting occupant notices for special conditions such as Fire Alarm System testing/impairments, outages, and other special circumstances. Additionally, this position will be responsible for maintaining all compliance posting in facility/common space. The management and documentation of inspections of fire extinguisher, spill kits, first aid kits, portable safety showers, risers, PIVs, and emergency postings to ensure compliance with PNNL/DOE requirements, Sequim City and Washington State licenses, registrations and permits. Assist in Shipping and Receiving functions Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma/GED and 4 years of relevant experience -OR- Technical Institute Graduate (TIG)/relevant AA degree or higher and 2 years of relevant experience Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in the marine environment with a preference for ability to crew or captain research vessels Testing Designated Position This is not a Testing Designated Position (TDP).
