Software Engineer 1 - Integrated Systems

The Disruptive Technology (DT) group develops detection systems and data analysis techniques for a variety of missions related to national security. Examples include systems for international nuclear explosion monitoring and radio frequency (RF) imaging systems for transportation security. The DT group is seeking a junior software engineer to contribute to a wide variety of research, development, testing, and evaluation efforts for these missions. This position involves maintaining existing software and developing new and developing software in support of sensor systems that include detecting, locating, and identifying radioactive material; exploiting RF signals; and, RF imaging. Critical characteristics to the operation and measurement of complex systems are automation, data acquisition, graphical user interfaces, along with on-board and post data analysis. The ideal candidate is a well-organized, self-starter, with a high capacity for attention to detail, and interest in working on applied, national security-focused projects. The candidate will work as a technical contributor receiving guidance from senior scientists and engineers. They will be responsible for performing the following technical tasks with the level of quality, timeliness, and cost to meet required project and sponsor expectations. Responsibilities include: Implementation of analysis and algorithms in software for measurement systems Design of graphical user interfaces for various applications Development of control software for various sensor systems Development of features which integrate into existing web based and standalone software tools used for spectra and system state of health analysis Testing and debugging of software related to analysis and system development Apply current and new software technologies to mission areas Support other interdisciplinary staff (e.g., electrical/mechanical engineering, physicists, etc.) in troubleshooting systems in laboratory space Contribute to proposals, embrace expectations for quality, safety, and security Responsibilities Designs, develops, documents, tests, and debugs new and existing software systems, hardware/software interfaces, and/or applications according to industry established software engineering principals and best practices. Works collaboratively within a team to execute on the full system development lifecycle including analyzing user needs to determine technical requirements; developing technical specifications based on conceptual design and requirements; developing well-crafted and documented source code; integrating hardware using software; automating manual tasks; and consulting with the end user to prototype, configure, refine, test, and debug programs or systems to meet needs. Identifies and evaluates new technologies or methods for implementation and continuous improvement. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: BS/BA or higher Preferred Qualifications: BS/BA in software engineering, computer science, or equivalent degree in science and engineering fields Experience developing software A working knowledge of C++ or similar language Effective written and oral communication Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively on diverse, multidisciplinary teams Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced loosely-structured organization under conditions of minimal guidance and problem definition Experience in development of device drivers to be used as part of an automation library Familiarity with the Linux operating system environment Experience with hardware automation and control Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., Bash, JavaScript) Experience developing multi-threaded/asynchronous applications Experience designing graphical user interfaces (HTML, CSS) Familiarity with version control (e.g., Git) and continuous integration platforms (e.g., GitLab or Bamboo) Familiarity with database management (e.g., SQL) Familiarity with networking principals (such as SSH, SCP) Background in data science or analysis Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment Laboratory work with systems involving minor risks such as vacuum, pressurized gases, cryogenics, radiation sources, and control/measurement systems Occasional travel Additional Information This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.
