Senior Scientist for Computational Biology

Overview The Computational Biology Group at PNNL is responsible for developing and applying novel computational algorithms to biological datasets. As a National Department of Energy lab, PNNL scientists focus on a diverse set of problems within DOE mission and other federal funding agencies. Current scientists in this group carry out research in soil sciences, cancer biology, diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders, drug toxicity assessment, chemical measurement, and metabolic networks among many other topics. We are currently recruiting for senior scientists who are interested in growing our research portfolio through competitive grant applications and collaborative research. Responsibilities Designs, develops, and implements methods, processes, and systems to analyze diverse data. Applies knowledge of statistics, machine learning, advanced mathematics, simulation, software development, and data modeling to integrate and clean data, recognize patterns, address uncertainty, pose questions, and make discoveries from structured and/or unstructured data. Produces solutions driven by exploratory data analysis from complex and high-dimensional datasets. Designs, develops, and evaluates predictive models and advanced algorithms that lead to optimal value extraction from the data. Demonstrates ability to transfer skills across application domains. As a senior scientist in the computational biology group, you will be responsible for: Developing scientific vision and writing competitive research proposals to governmental agencies such as Department of Energy, Department of Defense, and National Institutes of Health Developing and contributing to novel computational or mathematical methods for a variety of applications Working directly with experimental biologists within PNNL and across institutions, building capabilities to address computational challenges Leading collaborative teams comprised of junior scientists, programmers, and other senior scientists Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR- MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience -OR- PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience Preferred Qualifications: Experience with software development for scientific applications Background in biology, computational biology, bioinformatics, or related field Experience preparing and submitting grants and publications Experience leading interdisciplinary science teams Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment Not applicable Additional Information Not applicable Testing Designated Position This is not a Testing Designated Position.
