Responsibilities The Electricity Security Group is currently looking for a Power System Research Engineer with a strong background in power system analysis; power system operations; and modern software development practices to join our Electricity Security team. The position will focus on making technical contributions to ongoing and new research projects by: (i) leading the development of cutting-edge power system analysis applications, design, and testing of electromechanical and electromagnetic system models, and evaluate the impact of new technologies on bulk power system operations, (ii) applying relevant knowledge in the setup and configuration of cyber-physical smart grid testbeds to enable detailed experimental studies based on specific project needs. Besides leveraging common power system simulation tools, this role also includes the integration of real-time power grid simulators with industry-standard tools such as Energy Management Systems, Distribution Management Systems, and SCADA technologies, to enable integrated testing of operational systems across several use cases such as operator training, interoperability testing, control prototyping, cybersecurity experimentation, etc. Overall, this role will directly support the development of real-world applications for improving the performance, efficiency, flexibility, and resilience of our nation’s power system. The desired candidate will: Work with colleagues and external collaborators to develop innovative solutions to emerging challenges facing the power industry. Demonstrate relevant technical domain knowledge with a focus on power system modeling and simulation, optimization and/or controls for power system planning and operations. Demonstrate relevant technical domain knowledge with a focus on configuring/operating high-fidelity cyber-physical testbed components that include a range of operational technologies such as an EMS, DMS, SCADA. Assist the development of new business by contributing to new research ideas and proposals. Contribute to the development of technical strategies. Effectively communicate with senior engineers to ensure high-quality delivery of research projects on budget and on time. Publish research outcomes in peer-reviewed journals, conferences, etc. Mentor and direct junior staff in various projects. Present and promote PNNL research agenda and products in professional communities, e.g., IEEE, CIGRE, industry workshops, etc. Demonstrate the utmost professional integrity. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR- MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience -OR- PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with one or more real-time simulation tools such as Opal-RT (HYPERSIM, eMEGASim, ePHASORSim), RTDS, or Typhoon. Familiarity with setting up SCADA systems and communication protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850, C37.118, etc. Familiarity with developing and running Hardware in the loop experiments leveraging a real-time simulator and controllers, hardware devices. Proficient in modern software languages, such as C++, Python, Java, etc. Excellent communications skills in framing and delivering key messages internally and externally. Technical knowledge in power system modeling and real-time simulation, analysis, dynamics, and/or control. Experience in modeling power system dynamics, using a combination of: Transient dynamics in PSSE, PSLF or PowerWorld (or similar), Transient dynamics in CYMDIST, Synergi, GridLAB-D or OpenDSS (or similar), and/or Electromagnetic transients in PSCAD, EMTDC, or ETAP (or similar). Knowledgeable in the use of commercial power system energy management systems, such as GE’s Advanced EMS or MMS or DMS, Siemen’s Spectrum Power EMS, OSI’s monarch platform, or the SurvalentONE DMS. Proficient in setting up and troubleshooting SCADA systems and protocols such as ModBus, DNP3, IEC 61850, or IEEE C37.118. Proficient in one or more real-time simulation tools from Opal-RT (HYPERSIM, eMEGASim, ePHASORSim). Proficient in developing and running Hardware in the Loop experiments leveraging a combination of real-time simulation tools, controllers, hardware devices, grid emulators, and/or power amplifiers.
