Staff Partner Operations Engineer - Opportunity for Working Remotely

This Staff Engineer position in the VMware Service Provider & Edge Business Unit provides you with a technical leadership opportunity in a team that is building an innovative new product portfolio envisioned to disrupt the telecom industry. In this role, you will be responsible for driving product operations, testing and automation with focus on enabling partners to onboard and integrate their applications with a new VMware platform that envisions to make 5G networks programmable and intelligent. The goal is to make this platform as easy as possible to operate, integrate and interoperate with. You will leverage your experience and expertise in operating cloud-native software on Kubernetes, cloud platforms like VMware, AWS, Azure, OpenShift or Google Cloud developing automation such as operators, terraform modules, CI/CD systems (gitlab or ArgoCD or harness.io) and writing cloud-native applications on Kubernetes, packaging using helm charts and docker containers, to help build a product that is easy to operate, integrate and interoperate with, and is highly reliable, secure, scalable and performant. In the process, you will work with the latest and greatest in cloud, networking and 5G, collaborate closely with experts in these fields, experience first-hand the process of building a new product portfolio, and work in an environment that provides ample learning and career growth opportunities. Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing? As a technical leader, you will define and lead technical integration efforts with partners, improve programmability of 5G networks and drive validation strategies for a new VMware product portfolio at the intersection of cloud, networking and 5G. Within 30 days of joining, you will become familiar with the cloud-native product architecture, the services and APIs offered by the product, and gain hands-on experience with product deployment and operations, build and CI/CD pipelines, and testing and automation frameworks currently used by the team. Within 60 days, you will create internal as well as partner-facing functional specifications to improve day-2 operations such as monitoring, configuration management of the VMware platform and partner applications and make the platform easy to operate along with integration of 3rd party systems. Within 90 days, you will be supporting the partner development, integration and testing of their applications or RAN systems to ensure the integration experience is smoother and follow-up with any improvements in the form of feature enhancements in the VMware platform. Within 180 days, you will lead all the platform operational activities driven by partner engagements. In addition, you will mentor junior engineers in the team and collaborate with developers and architects to make the product easy to operate, integrate, highly available, reliable, scalable, performant, and secure. Within 360 days, you will be the authority and go-to person for all things related to partner integration, operations, and validation. The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis? Your regular activities may be modified to suit your professional strengths, but you can expect a variety of the following assignments: Define and drive partner integration strategies, operations, and testing for a new VMware product portfolio; own the end-to-end quality of the components related to partner integration such as lifecycle management, observability, configuration management etc. Collaborate with developers and QA team to improve platform operational capabilities and system tests that would facilitate in ease of partner integration Drive the development of internal as well as partner-facing system test plans and test cases Automate component level testing and drive automation of system level test automation Define and implement CI/CD pipelines to ensure ease of onboarding and validation Write documents and API specs to help partners, app developers integrate with VMware platform easily Collaborate with product managers and developers to create and review release targets and sprint plans Collaborate with developers, solution architects, field engineers and SREs to make the product ease to operate, integrate, highly available, reliable, scalable, performant, and secure. What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like? The hiring manager for this role is Giridhar Jayavelu. Giridhar is a Director of Engineering in VMware where he leads product engineering for a new portfolio of products in the open 5G networking space. Giridhar joined VMware in 2007 and has worked on several key products in VMware such as vSphere, NSX, VMware Integrated OpenStack and Uhana by VMware. His team is based mostly in the US but is now growing internationally to be closer to various commercial opportunities that are shaping up in various regions of the world.
