Responsibilities The Electricity Security Group is currently looking for a Power System Research Engineer with a strong background in power system operations and testbeds to join our Cyber-Physical Testbeds team. The position will focus on making technical contributions to new and ongoing research projects by applying knowledge in the development and configuration of cyber-physical smart grid testbeds to enable and conduct detailed experimental studies based on specific project needs. Specifically, this will include the integration of real-time power grid simulators with industry-standard tools such as Energy Management Systems, Distribution Management Systems, and SCADA technologies, in order to enable integrated testing of operational systems across several use cases such as operator training, interoperability testing, control prototyping and validation, cybersecurity experimentation, etc. Scope of work Create research reports related to energy security, modernization trends, and challenges Build and validate power system models using hardware-in-the-loop simulators, such as OPAL-RT Conduct performance testing of power system protection and control devices in hardware-in-the-loop simulation environments Develop methodologies and design scripts to analyze power system data collected in the field Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: BS/BA or higher Preferred Qualifications: Proficient in one or more programming languages (Python, MATLAB, etc.) Experience with power system modeling tools: Steady state power analysis (PowerWorld, PSSE, etc.) Dynamic and real-time simulation platforms (OPAL-RT, EMTP,etc.) Familiar with the use of laboratory instrumentation (oscilloscopes, signal generators, amplifiers, etc.) Familiar with programming power system protection and control equipment Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment Not applicable Additional Information Candidates must have the ability to obtain and maintain a future security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
