Overview The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security. Responsibilities The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks an early career scientist to analyze and model coupled hydrologic and biogeochemical processes from reaction to watershed scales, connecting the land surface, surface and subsurface compartments. The successful applicant will work with a multi-disciplinary team of computational and experimental scientists to translate the mechanisms that control coupled hydrologic and biogeochemical processes under current and future climate conditions into multiscale models. The successful applicant will be expected to develop novel conceptual biogeochemical models that incorporate plant-related functions into integrated modeling framework, publish results on peer-reviewed journals, and present scientific findings at conferences virtually or by traveling when appropriate. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience -OR- MS/MA -OR- PhD Preferred Qualifications: PhD in computational hydrology, computational biology, applied mathematics, meteorology, or related field with relevant work experience; Deep knowledge of plant ecophysiology and its interaction with other terrestrial and watershed processes; Experience with developing or modifying codes in a complex simulator using high-performance computing environments including compilers and linux shell scripting; Familiarity with numerical methods for differential equations; Strong skills in developing conceptual models for complex real systems (e.g., gridding/meshing, mapping of boundary and initial conditions, source sinks), implementing these in simulation codes, and integrating with observations through uncertainty analyses and inverse modeling; Strong data analysis and visualization skills using Python, R, PARAVEIW, or equivalent; Knowledge of differentiable programming and machine learning; Strong interpersonal communication skills; Track record of publishing work in peer-reviewed journals; Willingness and ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
