PhD Intern - Grid-Edge Flexibility Modeling for Distribution Grid Resilience

Responsibilities The Distributed Systems Group (DSG) with the Division is focused on designing, testing, and applying edge solutions to enhance the resiliency and efficiency of our Nation's infrastructure and of distributed sites that rely on that infrastructure. Our work is paving the way to enable large numbers of devices to be effectively integrated into a holistic energy system. The Group stewards core research capabilities in: renewable technology integration; distribution system modeling and planning; grid architecture and system engineering; asset and portfolio valuation; and power electronics. DSG is looking for a university intern to perform research in the area of simulating, modeling and analyzing distribution grids with flexibility provision from grid-edge systems. The prospective intern will likely gain experience in these areas: Perform interdisciplinary research in multiple smart grid domains Detailed distribution grid model simulation with advanced load management controls Analysis of resilience metrics from the simulation or field data Develop software in support of Transactive Energy Simulation Platform and Communication System Framework such as HELICS Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college. Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with data processing, package/module management and code work-flow in Python (Required) Understanding of electricity transmission and/or distribution simulation tools (Required) Experience with co-simulation and HELICS (Optional) Understanding of energy system processes, components and their workings, e.g., generation, transmission, distribution and consumption) (Optional) Knowledge of open-source modeling, application development (Optional) Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment Not Applicable.
