Overview PNNL's Earth System Science Division enables energy independence and national security through leadership in earth systems science, engineering, and decision analytics. Our work focuses on solving complex problems in the dynamic Earth system. Our interdisciplinary scientists steward a breadth of efforts that encompass research on plants to groundwater science and coastal zones, to storm prediction. Our research focuses on understanding and mitigating operational risks at the interface of human and natural environments. This includes predicting the impacts of natural hazards and extreme climate events on Earth and human systems, along with the impacts of wildfire, flooding, sea level rise and storm surges. We focus on understanding and mitigating environmental contamination and increasing the resiliency, security and sustainability of water resources. We provide geointelligence through advanced sensing and data analytics to forecast complex system behaviors and operational performance to understand human-natural systems. This includes informed decision making and enhanced community resilience, advanced monitoring, and remote sensing of environmental systems for energy and national security. It also includes developing energy systems, including geothermal energy, sustainable oil and gas production, storage and utilization, along with carbon sequestration. Driven by a “science-to-solutions” philosophy, we provide scientific leadership and technology to enhance national security, mitigate natural hazards and optimize disaster response. In the critical areas of energy, environment, intelligence, and defense, we deliver insights and decision support through the development of tools and solutions. Responsibilities Plans, develops, designs, and manages holistic systems solutions throughout the project lifecycle. Provides expertise in how to tailor systems engineering techniques and processes to meet project objectives within constraints. Balances systems thinking and systems engineering best practices, as needed, over the full range of technology maturity levels. Applies systems engineering expertise to define cost/benefit and risk/opportunity, develop and analyze alternatives, support decisions, and mitigate risks Have sufficient depth of understanding of engineering practices, including risk, systems, cyber security, complex engineered system, nuclear detection technology, climate change, national security, natural systems, human factors, renewable energy, regulatory compliance, or nuclear energy. Build teams to share resources and optimize research at the teams and groups. Develop and implement process improvement strategies and quality control methods. Have some understanding of systems engineering methods to be comfortable extending them to a range of software and technology applications. Interpret standard analytical/engineering theories, principles, methods, tools and technologies, and adaptations of technical alternatives. Participate in multi-disciplinary teams and manage and mentor early career staff in accomplishing reviews and building capabilities /decision systems across applicable PNNL groups. Participate in proposal teams for developing business and managing significant tasks within projects/programs. Effectively communicate software and technology concepts and results, including the preparation of high-quality presentations, reports and papers, being equally comfortable with expert or general audiences. The successful candidate will be accountable to: Reporting to the Applied Software Engineering & Technology Team within the Applied Decision Systems &Analytics Group for general staff performance and development, operational discipline (e.g., maintaining training qualifications, procedural compliance, safe operations), and promoting cooperation and teamwork within group and projects. Program/Project Managers and Technology Leads for performing assigned project roles and following applicable project and laboratory procedures and performance of assigned tasks on time and within budget. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience -OR- MS/MA -OR- PhD Preferred Qualifications: Degree in a technical field, preferably, although not necessarily, Engineering, Operations Research, Statistics, or Cyber Security, Economics. The successful candidate will have a range of skills and familiarity with several of the following areas: Software development, technology test and evaluation processes, configuration management and quality control processes. Past performance must demonstrate attributes of being self-motivated, self-directed, and must demonstrate experience managing work from multiple projects and working in interdisciplinary teams. In addition to analytical skills, a successful candidate will have excellent written and oral communications skills and experience in preparing, reviewing, and presenting the results of complex technical reports and recommendation to senior management.
