We’re hiring a Cloud Solutions Architect to help our customers and sponsors advance their mission in ways never thought possible. This position will lead proof-of-concept pilots, technical leadership workshops, and strategic implementation projects. It will be a strategic consultant to our research divisions and their engagements with government sponsors focusing on critical customer solutions ranging from complex applications, HPC workloads, big data analytics, AI/ML integration, and autonomic decision support. The preferred candidate is a senior technical leader who brings deep experience and strategic insight spanning Cloud architecture, design, and development to client-facing solutions. The role involves working with highly skilled research and engineering staff to develop and execute complex solutions for our sponsors. The ideal candidate enjoys working in a highly collaborative team-based environment, conceptualizing, developing, communicating, and proposing solutions that will enable target results. This position will be instrumental in building cloud blueprints, leveraging technologies from leading Cloud service providers such as AWS, Azure, and GCP, with best-in-class reusable components to enable “First of a Kind” projects. About the Business Unit The Computing and Information Technology Division (CITD) and the Chief Digital Officer (CDO) owns PNNL’s technical IT/OT strategy and provides the tools, data, devices, and infrastructure that PNNLers use to do their jobs every day. We partner with the research divisions to drive innovation and mission enablement while pushing the latest commercial offerings to creatively solve new problems in novel ways. We lead with design to drive simplicity and ease of use, engineering the systems that run the business, and innovating to transform our sponsor's business. Core to the CDO’s charter is developing and advancing the Center for Cloud Computing (C3) which drives technology incubation and innovation to advance the state of the art and catalyze growth opportunities for PNNL and our partners. We collaborate across the Department of Energy (DOE) and federal R&D community to define and accelerate the Center’s technology strategy and engage externally with select partners, sectors, and communities to co-create the future of cloud computing technology for the DOE mission and enterprise. C3 is instrumental in fostering the design, development, and building of next-generation solutions and ahead-of-roadmap major product features in partnership with PNNL R&D business units, sponsors, and technology partners. Responsibilities In this role, you will fill a vital capacity to help advance the scientific and national security-related goals of our sponsors, while using your expert knowledge of cloud services across multiple providers to drive the evolution and adoption of cloud-enabled solutions. You’ll provide clarity and technical direction, promote excellent communication and collaboration, create compelling solution adoption techniques, and help lead the way in research of emerging multi-cloud technologies. As a leader, you will be a catalyst for change. You will: Partner with our Research Directorates and other business teams – design and develop cloud architectures, integrate leading data analytics, pilot solutions, and develop standards and blueprints to advance our cloud strategy and sponsor requirements. Drive cloud adoption across the enterprise, including continuously building and enhancing foundational cloud capabilities, process simplification, and automation, and delivering end-to-end cloud deployment processes. Provide Cloud leadership to transformational projects – supporting our research groups in their mission-critical applications from proof of concept to production operations. Guide/assist application teams to optimize their project and automation efforts using cloud best practices and enterprise standards. Troubleshoot and diagnose technical issues, communicate and document procedures, and recommend architectural changes when necessary. Work across organizations to help accelerate public and private cloud adoption. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: BS/BA and 7+ years of relevant work experience -OR- MS/MA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR- PhD with 3+ year of relevant experience Preferred Qualifications: BS/BA or MS/MA degree (Computer Science, Engineering, or Math background) At least 7+ years of cloud solution design, cloud infrastructure/migration, and containerization experience Experience facilitating discussions with senior leadership regarding technical/architectural trade-offs, best practices, and risk mitigation Direct hands-on experience leading the design, development, and deployment of business software at scale or current hands on technology infrastructure, network, compute, storage, and virtualization experience Strong ability to mentor other software architects and engineers. Experience managing and migrating workloads to the Public Cloud. Strong practical Windows-based and Linux systems administration skills in a Cloud or Virtualized environment. Expert knowledge of Cloud Security Technologies & practices. Cloud Certifications (Azure, AWS, or GCP). Skills / Qualifications Strong track record of implementing Cloud services in a variety of distributed computing environments and leading highly available and fault-tolerant enterprise and web-scale software deployments. Keen ability to think strategically about business, mission, and science challenges and apply best-fit cloud technology solutions to hard problems in these domains. Deep familiarity with Cloud and Cloud-Native Principles, including hands-on experience with cloud service provider APIs (Azure, AWS, GCP). Proven experience in security design for complex applications, distributed systems, APIs, and services deployed to the cloud, on-premises, and hybrid environments including identity and access, network, vulnerability, and change management. Strong software development experience and familiarity with multiple programming languages such as C
, Visual Basic, JavaScript, MSSQL, Python, etc. Including hands-on with Machine Learning/AI models, Big Data and analytic frameworks, database management systems, and Open Source communities. Solid understanding of cloud infrastructure components (network, compute, storage, load balancers) and how applications should best leverage each. Strong organizational, interpersonal, analytical, communication, and technical skills are essential. Ability to build and maintain customer relationships, be a strong team player, and work both as a member of cross-functional teams as well as independently. Ability to manage ambiguous or competing requirements, collaborating with project teams to align on solutions, meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities. Experience leading the design and implementation of new cloud capabilities by partnering with application teams. Familiarity driving cloud optimization with a focus on balancing costs with business priorities. Additional Information This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.
