Overview As a Materials Scientist in the Materials Sciences group, you will join a talented, multi-investigator team performing experimental and computational research to design electrochemical materials for energy storage and conversion devices. You will develop strong hypotheses driven program to create molecular level understanding of charge transfer processes at electrochemical interfaces by combining PNNL’s strong battery materials design expertise with unique surface deposition and multimodal analytical tools such as ion soft landing and in-situ XPS/Raman capabilities. This position will primarily focus on understanding electrochemical processes by creating well-defined model interfaces prepared by ion soft landing and size-selected deposition/synthesis methods and combine the experimental analyses with computer simulations to advance the scientific frontier in electrochemistry. You will also develop a novel experimental research tools focused on electrochemical cell design for their seamless integration with material characterization capabilities including surface science techniques such as XPS. The research will require a close collaboration with prominent materials and computational scientists working towards designing next generation electrochemical materials with emphasis on energy storage materials. Responsibilities Major areas of responsibility will include: Partnering with battery materials team at PNNL to develop novel materials synthesis and characterization capabilities and employing these capabilities for leading research in battery materials Design and perform in-situ characterization of interfacial processes Providing technical leadership and direction for early career researchers and students. Lead manuscript and proposal development efforts Interact, communicate, and tackle technical problems with diverse team of scientists Present research findings at technical conferences and project review meetings Establishing active collaborations with research staff throughout PNNL Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience -OR- MS/MA -OR- PhD Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, materials science, or related field Proven background in synthesis and characterization of electrochemical interfaces in battery materials Proven expertise in combined electrochemical characterization with x-ray and vibrational spectroscopy Experience in operation and maintenance of high vacuum systems is highly desired Experience with participating and leading the development of research proposals Excellent written and oral communication skills Experience of collaborating with a diverse group of scientists and technical staff Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment Not applicable Additional Information Not applicable Testing Designated Position Not a Testing Designated Position About PNNL Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a world-class research institution powered by a highly educated, diverse workforce committed to the values of Integrity, Creativity, Collaboration, Impact, and Courage.
