Overview Protecting U.S. residents and visitors is among our nation’s highest priorities. As adversaries gain access to sophisticated technologies and materials, the threats grow more dynamic and complex—from cyber and nuclear to chemical and biological weapons of mass effect and other forms of terrorism. The PNNL national security mission employs our researchers, tools, and technologies to play a key role in advancing the ability to identify and secure nuclear materials, detect weapons of mass effect, manage nonproliferation treaties, secure our nation's borders, and protect critical infrastructures. PNNL’s scientific discovery and capabilities—rooted in innovative theory, methods, algorithms, and tools—are enabling stronger, more resilient technologies and systems to safeguard national security. Coupled with decades of radiological and nuclear materials expertise, advanced computing and threat analysis capabilities, and a broad fundamental science base, we are identifying and countering emerging threats that have significant impact at home and around the globe. Responsibilities Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking Masters-level students who have a passion for solving complex problems in national security, energy, and science. The Energy Sciences: Experimental and Modeling (ESEM) University Consortium, part of the NNSA Minority Serving Institution Partnership Program (NNSA-MSIPP), is a research-based program for students who are traditionally under-represented in science and engineering at one of the university partners; Prairie View A&M University, Tennessee State University, Morehouse College and the Inter American University of Puerto Rico San Germán Campus. The successful applicant should be a currently enrolled student at one of these institutions and will work side-by-side with a scientist in a specific research area that aligns with NNSA’s mission by applying cutting-edge research to make our nation safer and stronger. The areas of focus for the ESEM University Consortium are the application of both experimental and modeling methods to the interaction of metal cations with amino acids and enzymes, informatics for materials discovery, the synthesis, characterization and fabrication of polymers for energy production and harvesting including nuclear materials, and the environmental impact of new materials. PNNL’s core capabilities are chemical and molecular sciences; chemical engineering; biological systems science; climate change science; environmental subsurface science; applied materials science and engineering; applied nuclear science and technology; advanced computer science, visualization, and data; systems engineering and integration; and large-scale user facilities/advanced instrumentation. Students of all backgrounds and experiences are encouraged to apply. This position will be located in Richland, WA and candidates will need to relocate for the term of the internship. ****HOW TO APPLY**** To have a complete application package, the three (3) listed items below are required and must be uploaded correctly per the steps below: Step 1: Upload Resume or CV in “Resume” section only (note: if applying to multiple positions, the resume uploaded will be the resume used for all positions an applicant applies towards) Step 2: Combine the two (2) below requested documents into one (1) PDF document and name this file MSIPP-ESEM. This combined document must be uploaded into the “Additional Documents” section. 1) Current unofficial transcript, cumulative GPA must be listed 2) 300-word essay addressing the following: (i) your educational goals and how your specific interests/experience align with the technical areas of the NNSA ESEM University Consortium and also pertain to one of PNNL’s core capabilities listed above, and (ii) if financial concerns were not a consideration what career would you choose and why? If any one of the 3 components are not uploaded per the instructions listed, applications will be rejected and will no longer be considered. Electronic applications will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. (PST) on the posting close date.
