Nuclear Sciences Division capabilities and efforts are focused in three key areas including Environmental Health and Remediation, Nuclear Regulatory, and Nuclear Energy. The successful candidate will design and operate bench scale research equipment, analyze data, and produce technical reports. The candidate will conduct research and development activities including standard technical procedures that range from routine to specialized. Operates in laboratory workspaces equipped with fume hoods, glove boxes and with specialized instrumentation in order to conduct research. Have excellent written and oral communication skills and be able to communicate testing result to clients and stake holders. Technical Leadership– Establishes local reputation with specialization in at least one S&E domain. Making key contributions in setting technical direction. Project Execution– Selects and develops technical approaches on assignments with occasional oversight on complex problems. Principal investigator or co-PI on projects or tasks, while integrating capabilities of work team members. Supports scoping, scheduling, and budgeting at a project or major task level. Generates new ideas for proposals and business development opportunities while leading development of technical section of small to medium proposals. Demonstrates ability to acquire funding for self with programmatic impact at the sector and division level. Serves as a role model for quality, safety, and security. Impact– Establishes leadership role in professional community including professional societies, other laboratories, academia, and industry. Responsibilities This position resides in the Nuclear Chemistry & Engineering Group which supports the Hanford Site cleanup, river corridor protection, nuclear materials stewardship, non-proliferation missions, the nuclear fuel life cycle, national security missions, and energy production; and is engaged in expanding the beneficial use of nuclear materials. The candidate will conduct research work in support of nuclear fuel fabrication, irradiation sciences, irradiated materials research, and engineering. Will also perform the following duties: Develop or participate in development of future advanced manufacturing and advanced material systems strategies. Lead the design, building and operation of advance manufacturing experimental systems. Produce advanced manufacturing test specimens and perform feasibility studies for new material systems. Use these specimens to conduct analysis/data collection, and lead in data reduction and reporting. Identify and lead efforts to develop new procedures and methods for advanced manufacturing (including additive) of fuel, reactor materials and coatings, including post-irradiation examination of these specimens. Design, set up, test, and operate materials science and advanced manufacturing test equipment/instruments. Lead technical tasks and subtasks, reporting of experimental results via scientific publications and conference proceedings. Work with radioactive, non-radioactive and hazardous materials on the benchtop and in fume hoods and glove boxes. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR- MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience -OR- PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience Preferred Qualifications: Experience with fabrication of nuclear materials and refractory metal alloys, high temperature structural alloys, coating and cladding, and fuel types. Understanding of a various manufacturing processes like additive manufacturing processes (e.g. direct energy deposition, laser powder bed fusion, DLP), casting, forging, cold working, cutting/machining/shearing, polishing, welding/brazing processes is beneficial. Experience conducting and evaluating data from mechanical properties testing of irradiated materials including tensile, burst, and hardness. Experience performing microscopic analysis using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM). Experience with additive manufacturing processes techniques, and equipment. Experience with conventional casting, extrusion, and machining processes, techniques, and equipment. Experience with powder metallurgical processes and equipment, including sintering and heat treatment of nuclear materials are beneficial.
