Responsibilities Under limited supervision, responsible and accountable for operation, maintenance, and repair of the hospital steam generating machinery, distribution system and other mechanical equipment. Inspect, check and make decisions relative to operation of all hospital machinery such as boilers, incinerators, sterilizers, refrigerators, electrical supply and distribution systems, plumbing, oxygen outlets and distribution, air conditioning, air conditioning systems, and pumps. Adjust and/or regulate thermostats, burners, read gauges, detect, investigate, report on, account for malfunctioning machinery. Perform water testing, chemical management and tracking. Use hand tools and equipment necessary for minor and emergency repairs, make minor repairs to boiler equipment, empty incinerators, record temperature of refrigerators, air conditioning units and systems. Supervise personnel in areas related to the primary job, guard area against entry of unauthorized personnel. Receive assignments and work orders. Review work orders for priority status and designated time schedules. Read and interpret specifications and schematic diagrams. Requisition material and supplies; prepare and assemble materials, tools, supplies and equipment for work to be performed. Maintain all required records and documents relative to operation of plant. Maintain appropriate instruction manuals, technical documents, schematics and blue prints. Complete all work orders in a timely, legible manner in order that complete and meaningful equipment histories are maintained. Respond to emergency calls in a timely manner. Apply cost-effective measures in order to improve efficiency and support cost containment efforts while delivering a high quality service. Provide Values-Added customer service consistent with hospital policy. Keep work area clean, orderly and safe. Assure proper care in use of tools, equipment and supplies. Demonstrate safe work practices and attitudes, follow rules to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors, and participate in organizational and department safety programs. Improve patient safety in the delivery of health care by understanding and applying the patient safety goal for SJPHS/Ascension of no preventable deaths or injuries. Specific Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Ability to work with power equipment; ability to work with hazardous equipment. Requirements Licensure / Certification / Registration: City of Detroit First Class Refrigeration Operator license required. Education: High School diploma or equivalent is required. Related trade school or equivalent training required. Work Experience: Three to five years required. Experience with steam systems required.
