تفاصيل ومتطلبات الوظيفة
Overview Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Applied Materials and Manufacturing Group is seeking an Advisor to provide high level, strategic technical leadership to our growing research program in polymer materials science and technology. Polymers and their composites offer the benefit of reduced weight, high specific strength and stiffness, low cost, energy savings, and corrosion resistance. However, their use have come under scrutiny in relation to understanding their long-term effects on the planet and the need to better understand their potential of energy savings through material reuse. The Advisor will be responsible for leading the conception, development and implementation of a comprehensive cross-Laboratory strategy for sustainable polymer and composite manufacturing and recycling that both 1) effectively leverages existing technical competencies, and 2) seeks to build new capabilities to successfully position PNNL to meet its stakeholders most important priorities in this area. The Advisor will establish close collaborations with a broad group of internal and external stakeholders that include senior members of the U.S. Department of Energy, technical leaders in industry, academia, and at other research organizations, as well as PNNL technical leadership and research staff. The Advisor must be a nationally recognized subject matter expert in polymeric and composite materials, with direct research experience in an industry and/or national laboratory setting. The Advisor must also have demonstrated success in building and leading multi-organizational coalitions to address key research and development issues related to sustainable polymer and composite manufacturing. Responsibilities Establish PNNL strategic plans and objectives to address emerging national and international trends impacting future technical directions in the area of sustainable polymer and composite manufacturing. Work with necessary internal and external stakeholders to build coalitions to successfully implement these plans. As PNNL’s technical representative, set the agenda for Regional and National conversations about research needs in sustainable polymer and composite manufacturing, especially as is related to the U.S. manufacturing base. Lead the analysis of current and anticipated future markets, manufacturing and supply chains; and deliver results to stakeholders through internal reports and papers published in peer-reviewed journals. Engage with U.S. industry to represent PNNL’s capabilities in sustainable polymer and composite manufacturing and develop long-term research partnerships. Advise PNNL management and technical leaders on emerging business opportunities. Develop and maintain strategic, influential relationships with key DOE, Industry, University and other regional and national stakeholders, as well as internal Lab leaders and research staff. Effectively engage with internal and external stakeholders in the development and implementation of new research programs in sustainable polymer and composite manufacturing. Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of the full breadth of PNNL’s capability and research portfolio in materials science and manufacturing as well as in related areas such as process engineering and non-destructive examination to represent the Laboratory’s competency in this area to external audiences. Proactively contribute to the development of existing and new technical capabilities at the Laboratory, to include the recruitment and on-boarding of key technical staff. Participate as a technical advisor and/or principal investigator on research projects. Serve as a role model and mentor to staff at all levels. The Senior Technical Advisor will engage with Research Associate Laboratory Directors, Chief Science & Technology Officers, Division Directors, Sector Managers, Commercialization Managers, and technical staff engaged in sustainable polymer and composites manufacturing research, to develop and execute strategic priorities that enable a robust research program that leverages the full breadth of capability at the Laboratory. They will engage and regularly interface with high-level current and potential-future clients and collaborators, government officials, and industry leaders to develop strategic business relationships and partnerships. This position requires some travel to meet sponsors, participate in conferences, and engage stakeholders. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: BS/BA and 9 years of relevant experience -OR- MS/MA or higher and 7 years of relevant experience Preferred Qualifications: PhD, with 10+ years of relevant experience in sustainable polymer and composite manufacturing R&D.
