Both systems are designed with elevated flares sized for maximum flare load, plus ground flares to help reduce visual/noise impacts. However, Kinneil ground flares have proved unreliable and difficult to keep available over many years.<br><br>  <br><br> The terminal is regulated under Pollution Prevention and Control (Scotland) Regulations, and it has been identified that the current ground flares do not fully comply with the Best Available Techniques requirements.
