ÞvSecOps Engineer for Classified Programs - Opportunity for Working Remotely

Release engineering team under Security Compliance and Privacy Engineering team (SCOPE) organization is responsible for building and operating the critical infrastructure, often of national significance, to be secure, compliant, scalable, performant, observable, and efficient. We are looking for someone who will ensure workloads meet these criteria by design through closely working with product developers, internal compliance teams, and creatively thinking through problems. We build applications with velocity to run in a cloud-native environment, run open-source Kubernetes with consistency, and manage our customer's entire footprint with confidence to help them achieve their business outcomes. This role supports VMware's classified customers and among other responsibilities has responsibility for managing cloud-based services and continuous authorization to operate (ATO) activities. You will own our products running at the highest classification levels and help to drive our product and business strategy for critical government customers. What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for? The SCOPE RE team has all the challenges of running diverse workloads at massive scale with an added dimension of meeting some of the most stringent security and compliance requirements in existence today. This truly is a unique opportunity to apply your RE skills and mindset to difficult, but rewarding, engineering challenges that exist in only a handful of other environments. It will give you a chance to push the bounds of your security and compliance knowledge while at the same time growing core RE competencies (DevSecOps with Compliance) around building and running systems with SLAs that are critical to the success of our customers. Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing? Success for the SCOPE RE team will come via a close partnership with other product engineering teams to help them achieve key compliance onboarding milestones in the environments we manage and maintain SLAs in both system availability and vulnerability remediation objectives. The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis? Design, develop, implement, and/or integrate information assurance and security systems and components, including those for networking, computing, and enclave environment Work closely with software engineers and product managers to develop security and compliance automation capabilities using technologies such as Terraform, Ansible, SaltStack, Go, Python, etc. Assess and mitigate system security threats/risks throughout the program life cycle Contributes to the security planning, assessment, risk analysis, risk management, certification and awareness activities for system and networking operations A pipeline driven approach for building release engineering tools Building container-based solutions using one of the programing languages is a plus Handle upgrades of infrastructure and services through automation Participate in change management meetings to plan the work of the team for changes requested Run changes for other business units the team supports Learn details of VMware product internals Plan and perform work related to reducing toil, a key tenant of RE Work closely with development teams to improve maintainability and reliability of services Maintain SCOPE cloud services by performing service updates using CI/CD tools Identify, gather, analyze, and automate responses to key performance metrics, logs, and alerts Ensure compliance with appropriate security standards Conduct post-mortems to analyze failures and prevent recurrence Provide service support by participating in regular on-call shifts responding to service issues Maintain licensing, patching, compliance and build tools to do so Requirements Active Top Secret/SCI with Active Full Scope Polygraph is required 50% presence at a Secure Compartmentalized Information Facility (SCIF) in Northern Virginia Skills Required Understanding of the AWS Cloud Security infrastructure and any other technologies that VMware creates Strong written communication skills Confidence and ability to present briefings to senior level DoD and Intelligence officials in both prepared briefings and/or in ad hoc discussions Expertise in Kubernetes, CI/CD technologies Expertise with Linux ecosystem Working knowledge of AWS Experience in shell scripting Programing with any of the following languages Java Golang Ruby Python What is the leadership like for this role?
