The DevOps team in VMware Cloud Management Business Unit plays a key role in bringing all the code produced by Dev teams from a review to a production environment going through extensive testing provided by numerous quality engineering teams. In the process we interact virtually with all teams - Dev, Test, PM, Release Management. We constantly improve our processes and tools to keep up with new best practices and trends, this is why we use a lot of cutting-edge technologies for developing complex product delivery pipelines and robust product deployment strategies both in the cloud and in on-premises environments. The team is built of very passionate engineers with experience in numerous technologies and the word impossible does not exist for any of them. Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing? To be successful in an SRE / DevOps role engineer should be able to build and automate the whole software delivery pipeline for a given service or a product. This includes automating any build and test execution steps, building and maintaining monitoring and alerting solutions for the respective service, gathering and analyzing service logs to be able to detect infrastructure problems in the service running in the cloud. The SRE engineer is responsible for keeping the service availability of a given service and making sure that all needed infrastructure running in our data centers and AWS is functioning properly and without issues The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis? A day of an SRE / DevOps engineer consists of several different in nature activities. 1) Handling requests for enhancing/ building the CI/CD systems for a given R&D team. This in most cases ends up as building some automated procedures as Jenkins jobs, Terraform or other scripts. 2) Deploying and maintaining some service/ product deployed as a SaaS offering. This includes working with Kubernetes, managing databases (we mostly used AWS managed services like Aurora and RDS). 3) Monitor metrics and logs emitted from a given service in case of an alert that is being fired. 4) Building tools for improving the productivity of R&D teams. Tools we most commonly use in our daily work are: Gitlab, Jenkins, Gerrit, Kubernetes, Postgres and the code we write is primarily in Groovy, Python, Bash and Java. What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like? The team you will join is a very lively and energetic team with lots of different responsibilities and fields of work. We do write a lot of product code, but we are the team that delivers all the products by providing CI/CD solutions and complex functional and non-functional automated validation of our products. The people in the team are very friendly and we have a large array of hobbies and topics outside of the regular work to talk about on a daily basis. We even have an activity called Traditional Thursdays, where on Thursday morning we do some outdoor activity like mountain biking, hiking or skiing before we get to work at around noon. Innovation is strongly supported in our team, as we are tackling complex problems that rarely have an out-of-the-box solution, so it is up to us to invent the best solution. I personally am Alex and I am the manager of the team and I am very excited about all the above activities and try to participate in all of them. Where is this role located? Flexible: The role is considered flexible and will be a mix of working from a local VMware office and remote depending on your preferences and the arrangements determined with your future manager.
