Cloud service Engineer : Network File System

Network File System (NFS) is going to be one of the important storage service in VMC. Our team is delivering NFS on cloud, driving core storage SaaS transformation, collaborating directly and routinely with varous engineering service owners across teams, orgs, and business units . The opportunity for measurable and visible impact to the business and our service metrics is significant. What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for? This role is NFS DEV-SRE role you will be responsible for maintaining, monitoring and updating NFS on cloud. You will participate in our on-call rotation and will maintain SLOs of the service by responding to incidents. You will also work on product bugs. You will look for and execute on opportunities to improve SRE’s response through monitoring, runbooks, and automation. You will influence product roadmap and provide meaningful feedback during design of new services and features with an SRE mindset. Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months, you will work toward completing? Within first 30 days - Collaborate with SRE team and understand the VMC SRE ecosystem. Become proficient in the tooling used by VMC SRE and understand NFS. Ramp up on NFS and NFS service structure. Within 90 days join our follow the sun on-call rotation for VMC NFS. After 90 days - Be ready to lead and mentor one day, be ready to act in support of a peer on another day, as conditions change across the service team. You must be adaptable, think fast on your feet, have good instincts based on prior experience, and be ambitious to take on more responsibility. Provide meaningful input to design review of the next generation of the VMC service offering. What type of work will you be doing? What assignments or requirements will you be performing on a regular basis? Resolve monitoring alerts and customer escalations as part of a follow the sun on-call rotation. Review product plans and provide feedback for the next generation of the VMC service from the perspective of serviceability and observability. Review key performance indicators for opportunities to improve the service and the team. Reduce human toil through automation. Reduce mean time to detect through monitoring improvements. Reduce mean time to repair through runbook improvements and automation. React to new issues by filing bugs with service owners and collaborating to remediate the fleet. Work with other VMC teams to provide a consistent service for all VMC offerings across the VMware service portfolio. What is leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like? This position reports to the Manager of the core storage – NFS component, an experienced software engineer and manager who has many years of engineering and management experience. The team consists of highly competent engineers with nice blend and balance of seniority. We focus on iterative development, both of software and our software development practices. You will initially be part an established team that has a wide range of core platform responsibilities, but the expectation is that you will help blaze a new trail for the team and organization.
