The Elevator Pitch: Why will you enjoy this new opportunity? Working with ESXi lifecycle team you would be engaged in complex customer configurations for ESXi along with vCenter servers where large scale datacenters are deployed and collaborate with development team to debug customer use cases for ESXi lifecycle operations. ESXi Hypervisor runs on various OEM shipped hardwares (Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Cisco etc), and on various different type of storage devices (SAS / SATA / NVMe / USB / FC / iSCSI etc). Engineer will also get an opportunity to design and automate new test cases for VMware ESXi lifecycle Functional testing for various Lifecycle operations (Deployment, Upgrade, configuration). ESXi being the core of VMware virtualization product, any feature about to go on custom side, need to be deployed along with ESXi as part of deployment or a post configuration, hence this team would be the core of deployment of any solution sitting on ESXi to be used by datacentres. Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing? Understand ESXi lifecycle testing areas and automation Within 30 days of employment understand various ESXi lifecycle areas of manual testing to understand the product better, get comfortable with internal tools/utilities and get used to them for day to day testing activities. You will work closely with other colleagues to provide day-to-day testing support for ESXi lifecycles areas and update results to reporting tool. Within 90 days you would be contributing towards automated run monitoring and debugging, and executing them at will depending on the requirement. Within 180 days you will be in a position to take on individual pieces of ESXi lifecycle testing and maintain it’s coverage, reporting and automation. Within 360 days with all the above you would be able to contribute on multiple ESXi lifecycle testing areas from all aspect (coverage, reporting and automation). The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis? Your regular activities may be modified to suite your professional strengths, but you can expect a variety of the following assignments. Design, implement, execute and maintain manual and automated tests in Java (or Python) Design test cases (functional tests) based on the code changes, automate the testcases and integrate them into the continuous integration suite Analyse functional requirements for the product, understand customer use case scenarios and enhance tests as needed. Be part of test strategies, and automate tests for the next generation of solutions for ESXi. Reproduce complex Customer problems and test customized releases to Customers. Participate in bug triage activities, handle bugs, drive the activities for the bug to get a closure. What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like? The hiring manager for this role is Mohit Panot, Sr Manager leading ESX Lifecycle QA team who looks after ESXi install and upgrade using various different approaches, image customization tools and utilities which gets distributed to different OEMs. This is one of the team under a broader ESXi lifecycle team taking care of few other ESXi Lifecycle areas. He has been with VMware Inc (India) for about 12 years now. The entire QA team is distributed across and works from different parts of the globe. Most of the QE team works from Bangalore location in India, and some of the folks operate from Palo Alto (California).
